Newsrooms have used the Covid-19 crisis to test new newsgathering technologies and techniques. These include “ advancing efforts to gather content from the public and exploring audience-driven investigations .” Similar approaches have been piloted in the UK by the BBC’s local democracy reporting service and by Facebook , which funds community reporters to cover underrepresented areas.


Creating a more innovative culture remains a key concern gambling data turkey for many digital leaders. But it turns out that the best ideas don’t always come from the top. According to the survey, audience and data insights (74%), cross-functional teams (68%) and learning from other newsrooms (48%) are seen as the best ways to generate new ideas, compared to just 26% coming from top leadership.



The pace of innovation will remain strong this year as media companies accelerate their digital initiatives. But with little money available for major new investments, companies are likely to focus on improving existing products and brands (70%) rather than developing “moonshots” or creating entirely new products (28%). The focus will be on user experience and sustainable innovation that can adapt to a changing environment.

3 And what about new technologies in all this?
How can we not talk about new technologies to renew a profession that is increasingly dependent on them? Artificial intelligence has already found several applications. It is capable of choosing which articles to put on the front page, creating fact-checking tools or answering readers' questions via chatbots. However, biases exist and the positive externalities of these technologies do not benefit everyone. For 65% of respondents , they will even benefit major publishers more - those with the most resources to invest in AI.
