Reading IDEF0 diagrams The model consists of a set of diagrams and their associated material, arranged in a hierarchical order. A node list (or table of contents) must be provided. Arranging the diagrams in a hierarchical order provides an overview of the model and allows access to any part of it. Reading is done from top to bottom, considering each diagram as a context limited by its parent block. After reading the top-level diagrams, the first-level diagrams are read, then the second-level diagrams, and so on. If specific information about the model is required, the node list is used to drill down through the levels to the desired diagram.
