Disadvantages and risks of AI

Post by tongfkymm44 »

However, prominent experts such as Silicon Valley icon Elon Musk have warned about the risks of artificial intelligence, despite their own commitment to the technology. These critical voices are also supported by broader initiatives such as the Future of Life Institute (FLI) , a research and advocacy organisation that regularly brings together high-profile critics to call for a responsible approach to the technology.

“The pace of advances in artificial intelligence (I don’t mean narrow AI) is incredibly fast. […] Unless you have direct exposure to groups like Deepmind, you have no idea how fast it’s growing, almost exponentially. […] The risk of something dangerously serious happening is within five years.” Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and investor in AI, in a 2014 interview

Inferiority of the human being
One potential risk that worries many and has often been the subject of science fiction is the development of a “superintelligence.” A superintelligence is a technology that optimizes itself and thus physicians email database becomes independent of humans . The relationship between humans and such superintelligent technology could become problematic. Some skeptics believe that humans could succumb to the technology. However, researchers consider a deliberately malicious AI to be almost impossible. Nevertheless, many see a real risk in an artificial intelligence so competent that its activities take on a life of their own .

Technology dependency
The increasing dependence of humans on technological systems is also a cause for concern. In areas such as healthcare, where care robots are being tested, critics point out that people are being monitored by these technical systems . In doing so, they risk giving up some of their privacy and self-determination. These concerns are not only evident in the case of medicine, but also in relation to AI-assisted video surveillance or intelligent algorithms on the Internet.

Data protection and power sharing
Intelligent algorithms have the ability to process ever-larger data sets more efficiently. For eCommerce in particular, this can be good news. However, data processing by AI technologies is becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to understand and control.

Filter bubbles and selective perception
Internet activist Eli Pariser cites so-called filter bubbles as another risk of artificial intelligence. If algorithms increasingly derive the content they offer users from their previous behaviour (personalised content), the “world view” offered will become ever narrower. AI technologies could encourage selective perception and thus reinforce a growing “ideological distance between individuals”.

Influence on opinion formation
Moreover, according to critics, AI technologies could specifically influence public opinion. These fears focus on technologies that know users in detail or the use of social bots that influence public attitudes. As these technologies become more intelligent, the risk of influencing opinions is increasing, according to skeptics.
