Our Take: Like many users, we're confused by the vague version of "Hype Comments" Instagram is rolling out for Stories. The notification popup mentions the feature but doesn't explain it, with the report aptly describing it as "no one knows how to use it." Imagine a short-lived story suddenly sparking ongoing discussion among random followers. Do we really want to force social interaction with public comment in a private shared space? The term "hype" review is meant to build excitement, but this concept is completely at odds with the intended ephemerality of the story. And, knowing that Instagram often defaults privacy settings to "on," users may be reluctant to expose their Stories to unsolicited hype participation. The ability to disable the feature comes as a relief, but the apparent hesitancy and confusion among consumers suggests there's still an uphill battle ahead in terms of acceptance. While community interaction continues to evolve on social platforms, tying a public comment feed to a non-permanent story seems disconnected just for the sake of engagement metrics.
