During the meeting of Social Media Club Amsterdam, Prof. Dr. Wolter Mooi ( Department of Pathology VUMC ) spoke about the application of social media in scientific education. This was a speech I was really looking forward to. Mooi teaches in the Bachelor's program of the Faculty of Medicine. He has been using Facebook since the summer of 2010. Initially out of curiosity, but he soon noticed that the platform is a nice addition to his communication with students.

Mooi: “I chose to present myself as a person and see how students would respond to that. I started by posting inspiring images with captions, but I soon noticed that students were open to conversation. For example, I once published a photo of a heartbreakingly tragic situation in an African maternity clinic. I received special reactions from students to the photo I published. One student started with 'I worked there!', with an extensive explanation of the background of the situation there. Another student even came from the village where the photo was taken and had come to study in the Netherlands so that she could make a contribution in her own country after graduating.”

The teacher also advises his students via his Facebook page to be 'an armenia phone number list ambitious snail'. “Studying medicine, becoming a doctor is tough. Having a lot of stamina. Going a little further each time. Taking time to think about steps. And the way in which you can establish contact between teacher and students via Facebook is so special. It yields something and it is almost impossible to achieve in other ways. And yes, I also share holiday photos here and there.”
