Where to Start as a New CIO

Post by Maksudasm »

When appointed, the CIO usually has virtually unlimited powers, "immunity" for a certain period (usually from 6 to 12 months). The specialist needs to demonstrate his strengths as early as possible and demonstrate his effectiveness to management.

In the first two weeks, the employee needs to show the management that changes have begun to occur at the enterprise since his arrival. If a CIO has already worked in the organization before him, then the new employee needs to stand out from him, emphasizing all his advantages. This concerns not only issues of efficiency, but also various external manifestations (dress code, furniture arrangement, meeting schedule, etc.).

During the first three months, the CIO needs to build close relationships with the team. In addition, it will be necessary to understand all business processes and get acquainted with the business atmosphere in the organization. If possible, it is necessary to create a “quick effect” and initiate a number of strategic projects and initiatives.

The first 6-12 months are the most important for a new specialist. He needs to demonstrate his effectiveness and integrate into the team.

I have always been concerned turkey email list about the issue of moving to a fundamentally new level. So that the indicators would grow not by 2 or 3 times, but by several orders of magnitude. From a thousand visits to ten thousand or from ten thousand to a hundred thousand, if we are talking about a website, for example.

And I know that such leaps are always the result of painstaking work in five areas:

Technical condition of the site.
SEO.
Collection of site semantics.
Creating useful content.
Working on conversion.
And at the same time, every manager needs an increase in sales and the number of applications from the site at the moment.

Tips for a New CIO to Get Started
Build a good relationship with your manager

To do this, you need to understand his management style. To win over your superiors, you need to be as useful to them as possible. It is important to consult with them about the appropriateness of certain decisions.

After taking up a new position, the specialist must immediately begin solving the tasks set by the company's management. When performing them, it is necessary to constantly inform the management about the work process.

Build good working relationships with key business leaders

Business leaders are the CIO's customers. If a good relationship is built with them, they will trust the new specialist with their problems. It is better for the CIO to meet with all business leaders to personally learn about the difficulties they face in their work.

Form/reorganize the IT Committee

This will enable the CIO to discuss IT-related issues with competent employees. For example, analyze the results of an IT audit and coordinate the IT strategy. The specialist can head the Committee or become its deputy head (usually the CEO or his first deputy). The latter scheme is often used if the new CIO does not yet have significant experience and/or authority in the organization.
