Branking: Hashtags as a signal for authority and expertise?

Post by Reddi1 »

Mark Traphagen made an interesting discovery a few weeks ago. It seems that hashtags can be used to relate a person to certain topics (and other people). Hashtags may even be a branking signal .

Google's hashtags and personal reference

If you enter #MarkTraphagen #GuyKawasaki or #BorisBecker, a whole list of further hashtags appears that say quite a bit about the person.

ericenge – GoogleMark conducted a small experiment finland phone number data with Eric Enge , to whom Google had initially not assigned his own hashtags. Since the guys around Stone Temple Consulting have an extremely strong (i.e. large and active) Google Plus network, he started to link the hashtag #EricEnge to certain topics in his posts. The posts were widely shared and unfortunately he did not write a time frame, but the result was that Eric Enge was subsequently awarded 20 hashtags. Only one thing seems clear: hashtags with a personal reference have to be "earned".

In Germany, this seems to be more of a celebrity issue. At least, I couldn't find anyone with hashtags among the usual suspects in the area of online marketing and SEO. Only Stefan Keuchel has a hashtag, which is certainly not entirely independent of his former position.

So then, fire away and happy hash-tagging!

Feel free to share this article with the hashtag #svenjahintz ; )

Whether and to what extent Google actually uses hashtags for rankings is pure speculation. However, since the hashtag is a cultural phenomenon that reflects a certain unpredictability and complexity and can also spread organically, it is at least not unreasonable that Google is keeping an eye on it.
