Although we may find some positions that consider that communication strategies aimed at influencing people's beliefs, behaviors and opinions are an act of manipulation, the fact is that they exist, they have a name and there is nothing negative about them: they are persuasion techniques .

As early as the 4th century BC, Aristotle wrote a long and comprehensive Greek treatise on the art of persuasion in his famous Rhetoric , which consists of three books. In Book II, in particular, the philosopher develops the three pillars of persuasion: those based on credibility (ethos), on emotions and the psychology of the listeners (pathos), and on reasoning patterns (logos).

To delve a little deeper into this fascinating topic, we visited a friendly blog and found a clear and concise description of the three forms of persuasion that a speaker should rely on:

1. Arguments linked to ethos

They are of an emotional and moral nature and algeria number data concern the speaker. They appeal to the speaker's authority and honesty, to his credibility and relationship with the audience. In short, they are the attitudes that the speaker must adopt in order to inspire confidence in his audience. Aristotle wrote in Book I of his Rhetoric:

“We believe good men more fully and with less hesitation; this is generally true whatever the question, and absolutely true where absolute certainty is impossible and opinions are divided.”

2. Arguments referring to pathos

They are purely emotional and fundamentally linked to the recipient of the speech. Stories, anecdotes, analogies, metaphors, and similes can be used as emotional arguments, all told with passion. Effective stories resonate in the hearts of the audience.

3. Arguments linked to logos

They stick to the topic and the message of the speech itself, entering here into the domain of dialectics itself. Logical arguments supported by solid evidence are used, appealing to the reason and intelligence of the audience.

How much and how do you apply persuasion in your workplace?
Qlik’s Innovation and Design team published its second Research Digest , alongside Advaiya Solutions , this year based on The Art of Persuasive Communication in the Workplace , exploring the strategies and techniques we use when sharing and discussing results in order to influence workgroup conclusions.

As in its previous edition – where the research focused on trends in the use of multiple devices in the workplace – the study brings together the experiences of more than 200 people in the US and Canada with the aim of understanding their methods and approaches to persuasion in business.

For business users, the choice of methods and approaches used for persuasion depends on their organization's decision-making culture , their job role, and the size of the team they work on and/or manage.

Persuasion methods depend on the situation and context. A meeting, in-person presentation or conversation, an email exchange, a document – directly or indirectly, the use of various approaches to convince team members depends on the scenario or topic being discussed.
