The other day I saw a cartoon that I found funny. It was about what SEOs do in their jobs. There were several images, one of them said “what you think you do”, another one said “what people think you do” and the last one said “what you really do”. The last one showed a typical nerdy -looking guy on his knees praising a Google statue.
The cartoon made me laugh because it is quite close to reality. Although SEO means Search Engine Optimization, in reality the only search engine that we usually take into account is Google. This is normal, since it accounts for 96% of searches that take place in our country. For this reason, sometimes one wonders, is there life beyond Google? Well, there is; there are other search engines on the Internet, although their market share is quite modest compared to that of the giant Google. As it is not fair that only the first ones appear in History, I am going to present to you the rest of the search engines that compete with Google in Spain (without too many results yet):
Internet Search Engines
Bing : Yesterday I saw a computer that had Bing as its home page, no joke. Although in Spain it only accounts for 2% of internet searches, behind this search engine is none other than Microsoft. It was ios database in June 2009, so it is still young and can give many surprises. In the US its market share is already around 11% of searches.
Yahoo : barely 1% of searches in Spain support Yahoo! Having started as a web directory, Yahoo quickly became a huge portal with multiple services, including its search engine. It recently signed a collaboration agreement with Bing to try to unseat Google from the number 1 position in the ranking.
DuckDuckGo : This little duck has made an increasingly large name for itself in the world of search engines thanks to its promises of privacy. It is one of the few that does not track your searches or trade your data.
The following two search engines do not even cover 1% of visits, which may be a relief, because they are not very reliable as you will see:
Search Engines You Shouldn't Use
Babylon : I haven't been able to find very favorable reviews of Babylon. It's actually a software that offers several options besides searching for information on the Internet (dictionary, translation, etc.). The main complaint against Babylon is that it is often installed on computers without the permission or knowledge of users when they are downloading a program from sites like Softonic. Once installed, it appears as a toolbar in the browser and, believe me, it can be quite annoying.
Conduit: I didn't know about this one, but it seems to be a virus that installs itself on computers without the consent of its users. From that moment on, any Internet search that is done on that computer automatically redirects to search.conduit.com. Which, they say, apart from being a search engine, is an open door to all kinds of malware and malicious software.
