Balansmonitor 2013 recently published by Kennisnet . ICT can provide support for every form of education, but not every ICT application is suitable for every form of education. Why would you let students work intensively with social media if your education is focused on knowledge transfer and your testing is based on reproducing what has been learned? Many social media are very useful in educational situations where students have to research, communicate and produce. Teachers who attach great value to this can indulge themselves with the many social media available. There is certainly still much to be gained for teachers who want to activate their students more. Education can benefit from it.

Media savvy
Students are very clear about whether using a phone and using Twitter or Facebook for educational purposes is useful. In the interviews, students show themselves to be realistic. The fact that students can 'weigh' the value of social media means that they are media-wise than many would have thought possible.

Of the 10 to 17 year olds surveyed, 20% say they are allowed to use their mobile phone in class (for example, to look something up; using the agenda does not count here).
Three quarters of teenagers would like more use of social media in class, while a quarter would prefer not to.

Almost a quarter agree with the statement: “Sometimes I have trouble sleeping because I keep getting new messages that I want to read.”
Only 13% of young people think it is important that a teacher uses social media. The most important thing is that a teacher can explain well (84%).
For the majority (three quarters) of respondents, face-to-face contact is still the preferred way to communicate.
Social media at school
At the same time as this research, the brochure Social media at school is published. Many schools want to use social media, but do not know how. The brochure provides inspiration, practical examples and tips about social media in the classroom and in communication with parents and students.
